Why is dental treatment cheaper in Turkey than the UK?

Published 17 July 2026· 6 min read

If Turkey can offer the same treatment for a fraction of the UK price, the reasonable reaction is suspicion. Cheaper often means worse. So it helps to understand exactly why the price gap exists, because once you see the real reasons, you can tell the difference between a genuine saving and a corner being cut. The gap is real, and most of it has nothing to do with quality.

Where the saving actually comes from

The bulk of the difference is not about the dentistry. It is about the economics around it. The same crown, placed by an equally qualified dentist, simply costs less to deliver in Turkey. Here is why.

Lower running costs

Rent, staff wages, utilities and the general cost of running a clinic are considerably lower in Turkey than in the UK. These overheads make up a large part of any treatment price. Lower overheads mean a lower price for the same work, without touching the quality of the work itself.

A favourable exchange rate

For UK patients, the strength of the pound against the Turkish lira stretches a budget further. A significant part of the saving is simply currency, which has nothing to do with the standard of care.

The key point

Most of the saving comes from lower overheads and currency, not from cheaper dentistry.

High volume and specialisation

Turkey's leading clinics treat large numbers of patients and are highly set up for it, with in-house labs and efficient workflows. Doing something often and well brings the unit cost down, the same way any specialised operation becomes more efficient at scale.

Government support for health tourism

Turkey actively encourages medical tourism, which supports the sector and helps keep it competitive. This is a deliberate national strategy, not a shortcut on standards.

What the saving is not

A genuine saving does not come from unqualified dentists, fake materials or skipped safety steps. Those are not savings, they are risks, and they show up in the horror stories. The way to be sure your saving is the real kind is to check the things that matter regardless of price: licensing, named dentists, documented brands and real aftercare. You can read how in our safety guide.

A useful way to think about it

Picture the same branded crown made by an equally trained technician. In the UK, its price carries high-street rent, UK wages and UK overheads. In Istanbul, that same crown carries Turkish costs and benefits from a favourable exchange rate for the pound. The crown is identical. The costs wrapped around it are not. Once you see it this way, the saving stops looking suspicious and starts looking like simple geography. The thing to protect is the "equally trained" part, which is why choosing a licensed clinic with named dentists matters more than chasing the lowest number.

How to keep the saving genuine

The trick is to lower your cost without lowering your standards, and that is entirely possible. Choose a licensed clinic with qualified dentists and established materials, and the saving comes from economics, not compromise. Choose on price alone, from whoever is cheapest, and you risk paying for it later. The saving is real. Protecting it is about where you spend, not just how much. You can see a fair comparison in our Turkey vs UK cost article.
