How to verify your implant brand and certificate

Here is a question every implant patient should be able to answer but few can: which implant brand is actually in your mouth? It is one of the most reasonable things to ask, and the answer tells you a lot about a clinic. This article explains why the brand matters, how a genuine certificate works, and exactly what to ask for.

Why the implant brand matters

An implant is meant to last decades. If it ever needs a repair or a replacement part years later, the brand and model matter enormously. Established systems like Straumann and Nobel Biocare are supported worldwide, so any dentist can service them. An unbranded or obscure implant can leave you stranded, with a part no local dentist can match. The brand is not marketing. It is long-term serviceability.

What a genuine certificate looks like

When a real, branded implant is placed, it comes with documentation. A proper clinic gives you an implant passport or certificate that records the brand, the model, and often the batch or lot number of the exact implant used. After placement, you should receive documentation naming the brand, model and batch number. Keep it. Your own dentist at home may need it one day.

3. Check the brand is a recognised system

Names like Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Ivoclar and GC are backed by decades of research and global support. If you are given a brand you cannot find any independent information about, ask more questions.

4. Match the batch to the packaging

Genuine implants arrive in sealed, labelled packaging with the batch number. A transparent clinic is happy to show you the label matches your certificate.

What to do with the certificate once you have it

The certificate is only useful if you keep it somewhere you can find it years later. Store a physical copy with your important documents, and photograph it so you have a digital backup. If you ever see a dentist at home for a check-up or a problem, show them the certificate: it tells them exactly what is in your mouth and which parts fit it. If you had several implants placed, make sure each one is recorded, not just the treatment as a whole. A good clinic will provide this level of detail without being asked.
